Would world be a better place without religion?

So much of our history was shaped by religion that it's really hard to tell. But it would definitely be very different than it is now.
I agree that religion, or should I say people following it did some horrible things, but it also maintained order.
So, if there wouldn't be religion, we could be across the universe by now or there wouldn't be Earth anymore :)
